Maker of pool cues from 1992 to present, currently in Mesa, Arizona.
Scott Whisler grew up in a woodworking household. He also has a strong background in structural engineering. As a pool player, he was disappointed with the quality of many cues and decided to try his hand at cuemaking. He started doing repairs to learn how different cues were made. He cut apart as many cues as he could and repaired broken cues to see internal construction. He learned his favorite methods of making all of the different cue components so that he could incorporate them into his own cues. Scott had been on the road with a friend of Frank Stellman, maker of Sailor Cues. He talked to Sailor on the phone and got many tips about making good cues including what type of lathe to use. Whisler Custom Cues began business in 1992 in Tucson, Arizona. In 1997, the business was relocated to Mesa, Arizona.
Today Scott and his wife, Christine, live in Mesa, Arizona, where Scott still pursues a love of skydiving part time, with 3000 jumps to his credit. Skydiving was his full-time profession when he was starting to make cues. Christine helps with designs, glues veneers, does repairs and wraps, handles the paperwork, and manages their website. They like to make one-of-a-kind custom cues designed by customers. All work is done by hand on machinery that Scott has made. He does not use CNC. Whisler cues are built with methods of construction where all parts are threaded with glue releases. When filled with glue and tightened, the result is completely solid interiors, with no airspace, for playability, quality, and durability.
Scott makes a few full-splice cues with veneers, but their production is limited due to the amount of hours required. He can also make full-splice hustler cues from scratch, although most Whisler hustler cues are cut down from one-piece cues. Whisler cues are signed with the year of completion in dark ink somewhere on the lighter woods. Cues made in the first couple of years were signed with the month, date, and year.
Whisler cues are guaranteed for the original owner against construction defects that are not the result of warpage or abuse. If you are interested in talking to Scott Whisler about a new cue or cue that needs to be repaired, you can contact him at Whisler Custom Cues, listed in the Trademark Index.
