Maker of pool cues from 1961 to 1999 in Mooreland, Oklahoma.
Verl Horn started playing snooker as a kid growing up in Oklahoma, becoming one of the better snooker players in the state. Then he joined the Army and fought in the infantry in the South Pacific during WWII. After returning from the war Verl opened an auto body shop and raised a family. He continued to play pool as a hobby. Verl could not find anyone locally to repair a cue for him, so he started doing repairs himself. By 1961, Verl made his first cue.
The first Verl Horn cues were identifiable by the name "-Horn-" branded into the butt caps. As time progressed, he improved his method of engraving his name into the butt caps. Early cues had green and white Irish linen wraps until the eighties when he started to use black and white Irish linen, which he stayed with. Cuemaking was a hobby for Verl until 1985, when he sold the auto body shop and began making cues full time.
Verl made fewer than 100 cues a year in his one-man shop in Mooreland, Oklahoma. He recently engraved the name "Horn" in gold on the third ring on the butt sleeve of his cues for identification. Verl was well known for applying Irish linen wraps that are very smooth and flush with the handles and butt sleeves of his cues. He loved making cues and was proud that he could play well with them. Verl died in May of 1999, after a long battle with cancer. He was 78 years old.
If you have a Verl Horn cue that needs further identification or repair, contact Prather Cues, listed in the Trademark Index.
