VAN HALL CUES
Maker of pool cues from 1993 to 2004 in Berkley, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.
Herbert Van Hall´s lifelong interest in pool began when he was a young boy. He would regularly go see Irving Crane practice in his hometown of Rochester, New York. After high school, Herbert attended a four-year tech school to learn drafting and machining. This led to a job with General Motors, repairing equipment used on their assembly lines in Detroit. Herbert spent many years repairing machinery, and custom making many parts necessary to make repairs.
He always dreamed of making pool cues, and was able to start after his retirement from General Motors in 1993. With his background in custom repair, Herbert went right into repair of custom cues. He designed and built his own equipment specifically for custom cue work. Because of the reputation he has earned for high-quality repairs at very competitive prices, Herbert has not been able to make many cues. Van Hall cues have been primarily two-piece hustler cues that he custom made one at a time, to the specifications of the customer. They are easily identified by either a "Herbert Van Hall" signature, or an "H.V.H." stamp. Cues came with one shaft, and extra shafts could be ordered for $75 each. His standard ferrules were melamine with ivory ferrules available as an option for $55.
Herbert developed a space age shaft insert for the joints in his cues. He specialized in repairs, and made about 10 custom hustler cues a year in his one-man shop. Herbert passed away in early 2004.
