SMITH HANDCRAFTED CUES
Maker of pool cues from 1989 to present in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Howard Smith enjoys playing pool. As a player, he has always searched for a better cue. He has worked to make great playing cues that fit the individual player. His goal is to make the best playing cue he can make. He is always looking for ways to improve his cues for better playability. He also strives to make cues that look great, so the player and those who see the cue will appreciate its look.
Howard owns The Silvertime Company, a multi-faceted business that does many things. All of his cues are sold through Silvertime Billiards and Darts. Most of Howard´s equipment was not intended to be used for cuemaking, and he uses a lot of metal working to get the tolerance needed. He has modified existing tools to accomplish specific jobs.
Early Howard Smith cues have the name "Smith" written on the butt plate with a pen and sealed in. Howard is now engraving his name for a better look that will last forever. He uses gold, silver, white, black, and sometimes other color inlays to fill the engraved name.
Smith makes nearly all of his cues for specific customer needs. He does make one cue per year for himself. The closest thing to a "model" cue would be his "Thunder Chicken" break cue. According to Smith, "When you hit with it, it sounds like thunder, and the balls run like chickens." Smith cues are easily identified by a hand engraved "Smith" that appears on the butt plate of about every cue made since 1998. The engraving is filled in gold leaf, or whatever color best goes with the cue. Earlier Smith cues were marked with a pen.
Smith hopes his cues will outlast the player. If there is anything wrong with the cue, due to something in the manufacturing of it, it will be replaced or repaired.
If you are interested in talking to Howard Smith about a new cue or cue that needs to be repaired, you can contact him at Smith Handcrafted Cues, listed in the Trademark Index.
