Maker of pool cues from 1994 to 2005 in Granite City, Illinois, and from 2005 to present in Hazelwood, Missouri (a suburb of St. Louis).
Doug Patrick became interested in pool right out of high school. He had a best friend who was an excellent player, and Doug would go with him to the different rooms in the St. Louis area. Soon Doug was playing the game as well.
He grew tired of paying a lot of money for mass manufactured cues, and asked a local cuemaker to make a cue to his specifications. When he failed to provide the cue Doug wanted, Doug set out to make cues on his own. Doug bought a small lathe for repair work, and three months later he was able to buy a lathe suitable for cuemaking.
In 1994, Doug started to make his own cues under the name of Patrick Custom Cues. Since then, Doug has made constant improvements in Patrick cues for the sake of better playability. In 1998, he started doing inlay work on a manual pantograph. In 1999, Doug redesigned the construction of his butts for better weight distribution. Doug now makes Patrick Custom Cues with the aid of a helper one at a time, by hand, in his two-man shop. They make everything except the tips, bumpers, and screws. He specializes in building custom cues to the specifications of the individual player. All collars, ferrules, and butt caps are threaded on Patrick cues. Doug personally applies his urethane finish three times on every cue. The short-spliced blanks are joined to the handle by a unique threaded tenon. Shafts are turned a minimum of three to four times, ten days apart.
Patrick cues are easily identifiable by the "Patrick Custom Cues" logo, which was laser imprinted into the forearm or butt sleeve until the end of 1998, or by the "Patrick" signature followed by the year of completion on cues made since. One-of-a-kind cues will have "1 of 1" following the date. Doug´s goal is to create a top-quality custom cue, at a reasonable price. In 1999, Doug started providing cuemaking supplies for other cuemakers. He sells all types of wood and other cuemaking materials including screws and components.
Patrick cues are guaranteed against warpage for two months, and are indefinitely guaranteed against any construction defects that are not the result of warpage or abuse. If you have a Patrick cue that needs further identification or repair, or would like to talk to Doug about ordering a new cue, contact Patrick Custom Cues, listed in the Trademark Index.
