Maker of pool cues from 1992 to present in Lincoln, Nebraska.
In 1991, Mike Neal was working for Dick Coons, who had just recently started his own line of cues (Elite Custom Cues). Dick needed someone to do repair work for his customers. Mike went with Dick to the BCA Trade Show and bought everything he needed to begin doing cue repairs. After replacing tips and ferrules on numerous house cues, he started repairing cues part time. He learned other aspects of cue repair as he went along.
Mike played in pool leagues three nights a week. He noticed a need for a good portable cue rack. In 1992, he began to manufacture and market the Black Max line of portable cue racks. For the next few years, Mike traveled to tournaments and trade shows doing cue repairs and talking with different cuemakers. He learned everything he could about the art, techniques, and principles of building a high quality pool cue.
In 1997 at the World Nine-Ball Championships in Chicago, Mike Neal had a booth next to Bill Schick. He visited with Bill extensively throughout the tournament. In fact, Bill went out of his way to teach Mike things that would have taken years to learn. Mike feels that he owes Bill Schick a debt of gratitude for this.
Today Mike takes pride in building one-of-a-kind custom cues, by hand, one at a time, in the style of the cues made in the early 1900s.
If you are interested in talking to Mike about a new cue or cue that needs to be repaired, you can contact him at Mike Neal´s Custom Cues, listed in the Trademark Index.
