Maker of pool cues until the early 1970s in the Detroit, Michigan area.
Hailing from the Detroit area, Joe Marchant was a cue craftsman during the 1960s and 1970s. Richard Chudy was an apprentice at Saffron Billiard Supply when he met Marchant there in the early 1970s. Existing representations of Marchant cues were fashioned in the style accredited to George Britner, the foremost ivory turner at Brunswick-Balke-Collender in Chicago in the late 1800s through the early 1900s. (Britner operated the ivory lathe, producing balls. It was purported that Britner completed a number of cues for Brunswick, as well as his own cues.)
Numerous identified exemplars of Marchant´s cues introduce intarsia bands of petite offset stacked (1/10 by 1/2 in.) squares of fair and brunette woods. Marchant´s cues can be identified by the piloted brass joint imprinted with the name "Marchant" in script. He used a 14-thread flat-topped brass pin. His cues accentuated a smooth-bottomed solid ivory butt cap with no bumper. During that era, bumpers were not as fashionable on custom cues as they are today. Billiard enthusiasts of the time were partial to the cue butts tap on the floor to signal the opponent´s shot, over a bumper. Many principal Detroit players such as Tom Collins, stroked with a Marchant cue. Joe Marchant departed us a few years ago, living well into his 90s.
