Maker of pool cues from 1993 to present in Genoa, Ohio.
Jim Olms has repaired and crafted custom cues since 1993 when J.O.B.E. (Jim Olms Billiard Equipment) opened its doors in Genoa, Ohio. Jim was introduced to billiards before he was 10 years old, and played on a 3 ft. by 6 ft. table his father purchased for the basement recreation room. Olms spent his adolescence dividing his time between billiards, hockey, and baseball. After completing high school, Olms pursued his pitching ability to the Detroit Tigers farm system where he stayed three years as a long relief pitcher. During those years in Florida and North Carolina in the minor leagues, Olms spent his days playing baseball and his evenings playing billiards with his fellow teammates until a shoulder injury ended his chances of a big league career. After an occupation at Toledo Edison, Olms´ interest sparked in the cue repair business. He met Bill Connelly at a Toledo area tournament and observed his cue repair techniques. Olms found his passion and, at Connelly´s encouragement, acquired his first cue lathe and instructional video from Chris Hightower. Olms relocated to central Michigan, which placed him in the hub of numerous local and regional tournaments and he has consistently turned out cues from that time on. Reminiscent of several cue craftsmen who started out in refurbishing, Olms concentrated on "Sneaky Petes" (constructed by severing bar cues in half). Nevertheless, he has evolved into a master wood finisher. Lacking the tools and technique to fabricate points and inlays, Olms´ attention was centered on finding the finest woods and cultivating exclusive finishing processes, which place his cues among the most remarkable worldwide. It is not uncommon for Olms to spend a week in northern Michigan cataloging mountains of rough wood searching for the precise grain. Experimenting with his own proprietary stains over the years, Olms perfected an irridescent finish that transforms spectacularly under the lights. To add further ornamentation to his cues, Olms exchanges his superior grained shaft wood for stunning pointed forearms with Dave Barenbrugge, a great influence on Olms´ cue crafting expertise. Having never replicated the same design twice, each Jim Olms cue is an exclusive. The amalgamation of the premium obtainable maples, accents in dozens of exotic hardwoods, and the distinctive staining methods Olms has developed, make Jim Olms cues a standout.
