HOWARD CUES
Maker of pool cues since 1989 in Bensenville, Illinois.
Bill Howard started playing pool at the age of seventeen. He learned woodworking as a commercial and residential contractor in the Chicago area, specializing in custom cabinets, room additions, and remodeling. Business was slow during the winters, and Bill would spend time in the machine shop in his basement. During the harsh winter of 1989, Bill decided to try making a pool cue. Starting with a 2 in. by 2 in. oak spindle, and some corian from a counter top, Bill made a four-point cue.
Since then, Bill constantly improved his design and construction methods in pursuit of the perfect playing cue. Bill experimented with several joint types, including wood screws. He settled on a 3/8-10 screw that he made himself. It is made of brass, with flat bottom threads for more wood contact, and a solid hit.
Bill made less than 20 cues a year, during the winters, in the basement of his Bensenville home. All of his cues are easily identifiable by the "BH" logo on the butt caps. Bill specialized in making one-of-a-kind cues to the designs and specifications of the individual customers. Diamonds, gold, sterling silver, and ivory were commonly used on Howard cues. All work was done by hand, and Bill made everything except for the bumpers and tips. Bill is believed to have retired from cuemaking a few years ago.
