Maker of pool cues from 1998 to present in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Troy Downey was raised on a cattle ranch in central Nebraska, in Custer County, and he started playing a little pool in college. His first cue was an Adam and he was particular about its appearance. He was often sending it off to be repired, but got tired of having to do that, so he started to do some of his own cue repairs. Troy´s interest in cue making was sparked. He also had an interest in how to do an adequate job of restoring cues. At first, Troy´s repair jobs were all done by hand until he gained access to a small sanding lathe in 1987, which made the work easier.
In 1988 Troy started using a Clausing lathe and began to do joint work and replacing of shaft and butt collars along with butt plates. Now, Troy realizes that those were pretty simple repairs, but he was happy with the way things were going.
In 1989 T & K Cue Repair was founded, which was named after Troy and his wife, Kristi. By this time, Troy was doing repairs for people from far and near, rather than just people around Lincoln, Nebraska.
In 1991, Rory Mueller approached Troy about doing repair work for his company. For the next seven years, that is what Troy did. He was then able to buy equipment and start making Downey Custom Cues.
There are two individuals that have been instrumental in Troy´s success. Tom Madsen (Tom´s Q-Sticks) helped him with the purchase of the Clausing lathe. Rory Mueller took a chance on Troy´s cue making ability and bought the equipment that Troy now uses.
All cue components that Downey uses are core drilled, including the handle, making for a more stable cue. The points on Downey cues are flat milled. Troy´s first cues had his initials, TSD and the year they were made. At present, cues are marked with his last name, and the month and year made (Downey 05/05).
Downey custom cues and Mueller cues are guaranteed against any construction defects that are not the result of warpage or abuse for thirty days. If you have a Downey or Mueller cue that needs repair, or would like to talk to someone about ordering a new Downey cue, contact Troy Downey at Mueller Sporting Goods, listed in the Trademark Index.
