DIVENEY CUES
Maker of pool cues from 1999 to present in West Liberty, Iowa.
Pat Diveney has loved the game of pool all of his life. At about the age of twelve, a friend asked him to go shoot pool, and Pat became an instant fan. He bought his first cue at age nineteen, and he still has that cue today. Pat started doing cue repair work in the mid-1990s at local tournaments and selling other brands of cues. He thought that a lot of the cues he was repairing could have been made better, so he asked a co-worker to show him how to to use the lathe at his workplace. Pat sold his collection of antique Harley Davidsons and bought the equipment necessary to make cues. He made his first cue in 1999, and he learned by trial and error how to make cues for playability. Dave Jacoby, Paul Dayton, Nubs Wagner, and Mike Durbin gave Pat tips along the way. He admires the work of Jeff Hicks.
Pat has a one-man shop, but gets a little help from his sons. His shop is in the garage of his house, but he has never had a car in it. In 2004 he increased the size to make room for a couple of mills, inlay machines, and saws. Now the garage is 30 ft. by 34 ft. Pat strives for a good, deep finish on his cues. He uses the best materials he can find. Pat believes the tip, the ferrule and the joint are the three most important components in getting the balance and hit the customer wants. The hit of the cue is of foremost importance to Pat.
Pat Diveney is best known for his butterfly hustler cues. He started building them because customers wanted custom hustler cues, and he wanted to do something no one else was doing. Pat hopes to someday be remembered as a legendary cuemaker.
Diveney cues are easily identifiable by the "P Diveney" signature that has usually appeared on the forearms on almost all of his cues. Special cues will be signed "Patrick G Diveney." In 2005, Pat started using custom molded bumpers with "PD" within a circular "Q" .
Diveney cues are guaranteed to be straight upon delivery. Pat guarantees his cues against construction defects that are not the result of warpage or abuse for the life of the cue. If you are interested in talking to Pat about a new cue or cue that needs to be repaired, you can contact him at Diveney Cues, listed in the Trademark Index.
