BENSON CUE
Maker of pool cues from 1975 to present in Kennewick, Washington.
Thirty years ago, Richard Benson was a pool player in Washington state who needed a new cue. He was unable to find a manufactured cue that played the way he liked and he didn´t know any of the handful of custom cue makers around at that time, so he set out to make his own. With some of the skills he had learned in high school woodworking, Richard was able to complete his first cue in 1975. Today, Richard makes between 100 and 200 cues per year with the help of his son, Chris. All work is done by hand, and they make every component except the tips, bumpers, and screws, which are custom made to their specifications.
Beginning in 1994, when Richard returned to cuemaking after a one-year break, all Benson cues were stamped "Benson" on the forearm, just below the joint. Current cues are marked "R. Benson". 1994 was the year he made 35 improvements in the design and construction of Benson cues from the top to the bottom. Richard continues to introduce improvements to his cues. Benson cues feature their own custom taper, which Richard developed. They can be finished in oil, lacquer, or polyurethane, whichever the customer prefers. A variety of joints, butt caps, and other components are also available for custom orders. He is always trying to create new designs for one-of-a-kind cues. Many cues have been made using a chess motif, one of his favorites. Richard prides himself on quick repair work, turning down repairs if he cannot do them in a reasonable amount of time. Richard and Chris try to make durable, good-looking cues that play well, at a fair price.
Benson cues are guaranteed indefinitely against construction defects that are not the result of warpage or abuse. If you have a Benson cue that needs further identification or repair, or would like to talk to Richard about ordering a new Benson cue, contact Benson Cue Company, listed in the Trademark Index.
