Maker of pool cues from 1998 to present in Annie O's Billiard Pro Shop in Houston, Texas.
Anne Mayes started playing pool at the age of 17. In 1975 she was offered sponsorship on the women´s pro tour, won her first event, the Southeastern Open, and was invited to play in the U.S. Open. Anne played on the pro tour whenever work permitted, and from 1983 to 1986 was a top-ten-ranked player. From 1986 to 1994 she worked full time in management for the Engineering Division at Texaco, and had to put pool on hold. In 1995 she was laid off and was able to start playing again on the WPBA tour for two years. In late 1996 she had to retire from the tour once again, this time due to poor health. Her next job was the creation of the magazine "Billiard & Dart News" in 1997. After a year and a half of struggling to build circulation, she decided she would be much happier crafting custom cues. With the help of friends, Annie O´s Billiard Pro Shop opened in June, 1998. She started by buying a lathe for repairs. With advice from Jim Buss, Jerry Olivier, and other cuemakers, she quickly learned
Anne has used three different types of identifying marks since she started making cues. The first cues were signed "Annie O" from 1998 to 2000. She then started engraving "AO" on the butt caps from 2000 to 2003. From 2003 to present, Anne has engraved "AO Cues," followed by a serial number, on the butt caps. She keeps a record of each serial numbered cue to help with future identification and to help increase the owner´s chances of recovery in case of theft.
Anne makes all cue components except for the pins and shaft inserts. Most of her cues are custom ordered. She offers a choice of three of her own proprietary shafts as options for her cues. The newest is the AO NT35 Flat-Laminated shaft, made from 35 flat nothern hard rock maple laminations, the same as a tree normally grows. A large selection of hardwoods and exotic woods are offered at the same price as maple: bocote, bloodwood, bubinga, cocobolo and other rosewoods, gabon or macassar ebony, holly, kingwood, padauk, purpleheart, black palm, satinwood, tulipwood, and zebrawood. Burls, snakewood, pink ivorywood, and wildwoods are also available at an additional charge. AO Cues are guaranteed against manufacturing defects while still owned by the original owner. If you have an AO cue that needs further identification or repair, or would like to order a new AO cue, contact Anne Mayes at Annie O´s Billiard Pro Shop, which is listed in the Trademark Index.
