ALLEN'S CUSTOM CUES
Maker of pool cues from 1975 to present in Hawthorne, California.
Gary Allen became interested in woodworking after taking a course in high school. After graduation, he went on to work in a machine shop, with Dale Patten as his supervisor.
Gary left his machine shop job to start work in a pool room. One day in 1975 his former supervisor came in with a cue he had made. This prompted Gary to leave his current position and start making pool cues. For the next five years Gary worked full time with Dale Patten making Richie Florence cues, and continued to make cues with Dale on a part-time basis for the next ten years.
He then worked with Tim Padgett for a year. In 1990 Gary decided it was time to start his own line of cues. He had been wanting to do this for many years, and knew it was time to follow his dream.
Allen cues are easily identifiable by the "Allen" logo which appears on butt caps. Gary is proud that his cues are made the "old-fashioned way," without the aid of a CNC machine. All of his work is done by hand on a lathe in his home-based shop. For special inlays he uses a pantograph. Gary makes his own short blanks and makes some full-spliced cues with traditional and butterfly points. He likes to design and make one-of-a-kind custom cues, and specializes in tailoring the length, weight, balance, taper, and joint to the desires of the customer. Gary uses available exotic hardwoods and offers a variety of joint types, including a joint screw made of wood. Butt caps are offered in three colors of Delrin, which he prefers for its durability. In 2002, he changed his standard finish from a two-part urethane to the less toxic butyl acetate lacquer.
Allen cues are guaranteed against construction defects that are not the result of warping or abuse. If you would like to talk to Gary regarding an order, or have an Allen cue that needs further identification or repair, contact Allen´s Custom Cues, listed in the Trademark Index.
